inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.
student council was a big part of my life in high school. i have participated in it since my frst year of high school. when i frst joined, i was quiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. i was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. this all began to change. half way through my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me and asked why i did not participate that much. i did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. after this, i began to think of an answer. i became frustrated and decided to change. i started to show up at events and had a great time. i realized i loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. in my sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, i asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. i did not fgure out the answer to why i was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.
when i looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. these are two very broad defnitions of leadership. many people have different notions of what this word actually means. when i was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is, i thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. what could i learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? but when i sat down to come up with a couple of answers, i realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.
all i know about leadership i learned from a calculator. a calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. it can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. it can solve any type of problem. these are all important equalities a leader has to have. a leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. they have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.
all i know about leadership i learned from a ball. a ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. it is round and has no creases. a ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. all of these qualities are also leadership qualities. a leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. he or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. a leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. they have to trust everyone they lead to be able to "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.
this activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. a leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. they cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. they should not delegate all their responsibilities away.
leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.
i learned through all of this that i have many of these qualities.
i have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and be versatile. from answering this question, i realized that i could lead effectively, even if my leadership style is different from other individuals. when i joined student council in my frst year of high school, i did not have these qualities because i was never put into a situation where i had to lead. i was too reserved to try. when i tried, i learned that i could succeed in this. i did not realize until i answered this question about leadership. i was never able to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group and telling everyone what to do when i was a freshman, i thought leadership was this. i did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict. i stereotyped a leader then. thisis where i went wrong. a leader is about being yourself and never letting anyone change you. i thought i had to change to be a good leaderonly when i expanded my comfort zone did i realize this was not trueit only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

1、sat/act考試成績(jī)(申請(qǐng)本科需要)
如果你在美國(guó)讀高中,sat是一定要考的;如果你在國(guó)內(nèi)讀高中,申請(qǐng)美國(guó)本科時(shí),排名前60位的大學(xué)基本都對(duì)此有要求。所以,對(duì)于絕大多數(shù)申請(qǐng)美國(guó)留學(xué)的學(xué)生來(lái)說(shuō),這一考試都是繞不開(kāi)的。
絕大多數(shù)美國(guó)大學(xué),遞交sat成績(jī)或act成績(jī)都是可以的,但從名校申請(qǐng)的統(tǒng)計(jì)數(shù)據(jù)表明,提交sat的申請(qǐng)者幾乎是act的兩倍,更多人還是選擇sat。
sat考試分為sat1和sat2,sat1俗稱美國(guó)高考,是一個(gè)考察學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)能力的考試。sat2是學(xué)科的測(cè)試,其實(shí)就是專業(yè)課考試,給大學(xué)呈現(xiàn)學(xué)生在專門(mén)領(lǐng)域水平。sat2大部分學(xué)校是不需提交的。國(guó)內(nèi)學(xué)生主要考sat1,是否需要考sat2取決于申請(qǐng)學(xué)校的要求。

4、成績(jī)單
申請(qǐng)美國(guó)本科,需要遞交9~12年級(jí)的成績(jī)單,也就是初三到高三(申請(qǐng)時(shí)未畢業(yè)的同學(xué)不必打印高三的),別落了初三!申請(qǐng)美國(guó)研究生,需要遞交大一到大四的成績(jī)單(未畢業(yè)同學(xué)不必打印大四的)。
學(xué)校如果有自己的模版,用學(xué)校的模版即可,如果學(xué)校沒(méi)有模版,就用學(xué)校抬頭紙打印成績(jī)單,落款蓋公章,封入學(xué)校官方信封,兩邊封口處加蓋學(xué)校公章。
成績(jī)單需要譯成英文,可以分開(kāi)兩頁(yè)紙,也可以中英對(duì)照。
成績(jī)單的數(shù)量最好比申請(qǐng)的學(xué)校數(shù)量多3~5份,以備不時(shí)之需。
成績(jī)單上最好將自己的百分成績(jī)換算成gpa,并顯示自己在班級(jí)所排名次。
美國(guó)有的學(xué)校要求成績(jī)單從學(xué)校寄出,大家要注意申請(qǐng)學(xué)校是否有要求。如果沒(méi)有,把成績(jī)單和其它材料一并寄出即可。

3、說(shuō)明一個(gè)對(duì)你有重要影響的人并描述對(duì)你的影響。
4、描述一個(gè)影響你的人并說(shuō)明對(duì)你的影響,該人物可以是小說(shuō)中的﹑歷史中的﹑或者某創(chuàng)新性作品(比如在藝術(shù)﹑音樂(lè)﹑科學(xué)等方面)中的。

我出生在新疆——亞歐大陸的中心。那里是工農(nóng)業(yè)文明都不太發(fā)達(dá)的地方,但自然風(fēng)光很是俊美。北邊有如瑞士的雪山湖泊森林,目力所及空無(wú)一物的草原,南邊是廣袤的沙漠和點(diǎn)綴其間的郁郁蔥蔥生機(jī)勃勃的綠洲。小學(xué)是在北京上的,一所私立小學(xué)(北京的第一所)。由于是私人辦學(xué),自主性更大一些,我們的校長(zhǎng)就決定不讓我們向其他那些公立小學(xué)的學(xué)生那樣只是注重語(yǔ)文數(shù)學(xué),他給我們裝備了在小學(xué)生看來(lái)是非常先進(jìn)的科學(xué)儀器和各類體育設(shè)施,我們自主選擇好老師教。使得我有幸在小學(xué)三年級(jí)的時(shí)候就能經(jīng)常使用顯微鏡,隨時(shí)看我從校園各處找到的材料——桃樹(shù)的葉子、無(wú)名的小花、枯草的根。把各式各樣的材料制成臨時(shí)裝片是我當(dāng)時(shí)最大的歡樂(lè)——比糖果還誘惑人。四年級(jí)的時(shí)候我協(xié)助老師做了個(gè)白兔的標(biāo)本,直到我離校的那年都放在校長(zhǎng)室的陳列柜里呢。中學(xué)是在北京師范大學(xué)附屬實(shí)驗(yàn)中學(xué),是市重點(diǎn),北京市排2、3位,就在國(guó)家教育部的后面。我們的老師很有水平,講的課都旁征博引、十分有趣。在那我汲取了各科知識(shí):地理、歷史、政治、物理、化學(xué)……成績(jī)都很不錯(cuò),尤其是地理和生物,從初一到高三凡是這兩科考試,我都沒(méi)下過(guò)92分。但我還是對(duì)生物最感興趣。我參加了生物實(shí)驗(yàn)選修課,在那我做了比教學(xué)大綱多很多的實(shí)驗(yàn):dna粗提取、解剖青蛙、鑒定葉綠素……我在高二的時(shí)候自學(xué)的中國(guó)大學(xué)生物系一年級(jí)要學(xué)的普通生物學(xué),參加全國(guó)中學(xué)生生物競(jìng)賽得二等獎(jiǎng),是北京市的前30——北京一共有將近十萬(wàn)人報(bào)名。
最令我激動(dòng),也是最難以忘懷的是那段在德國(guó)的日子。2005年8月30號(hào)到9月18日,受德國(guó)巴登符騰堡州政府邀請(qǐng),我和其他11名同學(xué)代表中國(guó)學(xué)生和當(dāng)?shù)刈顑?yōu)秀的60名學(xué)生 一起參加science academy。在那里,我是制藥組的,和trixi、filix等十名德國(guó)同學(xué)一組,還有我的中國(guó)同學(xué)。開(kāi)始去那我還有些不知所措,因?yàn)樵谥袊?guó)沒(méi)有制藥這個(gè)學(xué)科,相比去science academy 的上物理、化學(xué)、計(jì)算機(jī)等的中國(guó)同學(xué),我對(duì)我在日后半個(gè)月里要干的事可算得上是真正的一無(wú)所知。第一堂課,老師和同學(xué)們做了自我介紹后什么都沒(méi)說(shuō)就帶著我們拿著修剪樹(shù)叉的大剪出門(mén)去了。大家都莫名其妙,疑惑地相互望著——就像在中國(guó)時(shí)我和我同學(xué)間那樣,讓我感覺(jué)沒(méi)有身處異國(guó),于是我走上前去,問(wèn)了老師一個(gè)——老師,咱去花園里剪藥去么?老師微笑地看了我一下說(shuō)很好,我這就給你們講這是要做什么。結(jié)果是我們用樹(shù)皮做出了阿司匹林的栓劑和膠囊。我們上課的時(shí)候用英語(yǔ)講,課堂氣氛很是活躍。課后,我們一起打網(wǎng)球,一起游泳,一起躺在草坪上曬太陽(yáng),述說(shuō)自己國(guó)家的趣事…… science academy結(jié)束的那天,我們緊緊地?fù)肀г谝黄?,是真的不想分開(kāi)。
我喜愛(ài)并擅長(zhǎng)生物,絕對(duì)不是牽強(qiáng)附會(huì)。我喜歡上生物課,看生物方面的書(shū),是因?yàn)槊看沃灰呛蜕镉嘘P(guān)的知識(shí),我真的能看一遍就記在心里——有時(shí)候甚至是無(wú)意識(shí)的。生物課上老師講的哪怕再小的知識(shí)點(diǎn),我都跟黑洞似的吸了進(jìn)去,例如……??赡苁且?yàn)槊看挝叶加兴圃嘧R(shí)的感覺(jué),并且很多都能立刻在腦海里形成一個(gè)圖像:看著老師在臺(tái)上比畫(huà),我眼前就出現(xiàn)了蛋白質(zhì)的組織結(jié)構(gòu)……也因?yàn)檫@樣雖然沒(méi)有怎么為了考試去復(fù)習(xí)但基本上每次生物考試我都是我們班的第一名。考試成績(jī)并不能說(shuō)明什么。我喜歡生物是喜歡在學(xué)習(xí)它時(shí)的那種享受的感覺(jué)。課后的生物選修課我都很早到,最后離開(kāi),就覺(jué)得如果一生都如此度過(guò)都不曾遺憾,但那兩個(gè)半小時(shí)還是覺(jué)得一晃就過(guò)去了比大課間的半小時(shí)還短。有的時(shí)候在實(shí)驗(yàn)室里看完生物回家日已西斜,心里充滿了滿足和成就感。
現(xiàn)在無(wú)論是從諸如電視、雜志、網(wǎng)絡(luò)等媒體上接受到的,還是自己親身體驗(yàn)到的,都顯示出了現(xiàn)在生態(tài)環(huán)境問(wèn)題的惡化的現(xiàn)實(shí),叫人不能不擔(dān)心。中國(guó)中西部干化、沙化現(xiàn)象明顯;北京市郊一些原先是草木繁茂、流水淙淙的荒地在一夜之間就被填平蓋上了四四方方的火柴盒,然后是北京幾乎都不下雪的冬天;我家小區(qū)物業(yè)為了美化環(huán)境弄出的小河很快就成了臭水溝。以上這些看起來(lái)似乎是工業(yè)化或別的團(tuán)體個(gè)人的行為,與己無(wú)關(guān),也沒(méi)那個(gè)能力權(quán)利去管。但這理由卻不能使我心安,因?yàn)樵谌粘I钪?,我們的很多行為都?duì)生態(tài)的可持續(xù)發(fā)展夠成危險(xiǎn)。例如我們每天沐浴時(shí)用的洗發(fā)液如果不經(jīng)過(guò)非常嚴(yán)格的處理就會(huì)對(duì)水系統(tǒng)造成威脅。于是我相當(dāng)認(rèn)真地注意收集解決此類問(wèn)題的方法,結(jié)果出乎意料的發(fā)現(xiàn)傳統(tǒng)的習(xí)俗更能解決問(wèn)題,例如傣族人就用發(fā)酵了的淘米水洗頭發(fā),這絕對(duì)環(huán)保而且因?yàn)橛眠@個(gè)很多傣族人到老都是一頭黑發(fā);中國(guó)的古老中醫(yī)用草藥銀針只治病,好像沒(méi)有什么抗生素的問(wèn)題。我有點(diǎn)不明白,似乎傳統(tǒng)的生活方式跟自然更為友好,那么我們的生物科學(xué)又有什么別的特殊的作用么?所以我想到美國(guó)這個(gè)科學(xué)更為發(fā)達(dá),科學(xué)更接近科學(xué)的地方學(xué)習(xí),弄清楚它,試著用它來(lái)解決一些惡性循環(huán)的問(wèn)題,維護(hù)一個(gè)和諧的生存環(huán)境,或者用科學(xué)解釋、溝通類似中醫(yī)這樣的傳統(tǒng)方式與現(xiàn)代科學(xué)。

as a double major in anthropology and psychology at the university of rhodeisland, i have gained a strong background in both fields. my background isespecially strong in physical anthropology, my primary field of interest.physical anthropology consumes my life; i do not study it because i find itsomewhat interesting but because i am devoted to it; i want to make it my life.in addition to maintaining a high gpa throughout my college career, and makingthe dean's list several times, i have also worked hard as a supervisor at brookspharmacy for the past five years. working my own way through college not onlydemonstrates my determination to gaining a high quality education and theseriousness with which i treat academics, but also attests to my leadershipability, maturity, and responsibility, both as a supervisor and as a student atthe university of rhode island.
my primary goal in applying to your graduate program is to prepare myselffor a career in forensic anthropology. interested in furthering the current bodyof research and in improving techniques used in the identification of humanremains, i am very committed to pursuing forensic anthropology and believe yourgraduate program in anthropology will provide me with an excellent foundation inthe area of physical and forensic anthropology. with a master's degree andph.d., i will be well prepared to lead a very promising career. while i have nodoubt that the program will push me to my limits, i am confident that i can facethe rigorous challenges posed by graduate study and thrive under the demandingenvironment that advanced studies entail.

in addition to my ability to excel in the classroom, i have demonstrated aproficiency in all aspects of conducting research. research has become afundamental part of my college career, and i hope it will become the primarycomponent of my future. as a sophomore at the university of rhode island, idesigned a research project entitled "grooming and affiliative behavior in threespecies of non-human primates" under the guidance of dr. su boatright horowitzin the psychology department at uri. my research proposal gained approval fromthe institutional care and use committee at uri and at the roger william parkand zoo where the three species of non-human primates (gibbons, sakis, andlemurs) included in my study are kept. in addition to writing a successfulresearch proposal, i also wrote and received a small funds grant from theuniversity of rhode island in order to conduct my research. by being intimatelyinvolved in every aspect of research, from proposal and grant writing to datacollection and analysis, i have learned what it takes to be a researcher, butmore than that, i have learned how fulfilling and interesting research canbe.
in the spring of 20xx, i will be presenting my results at a posterpresentation at the university of rhode island, and am planning to eventuallypublish my findings. not only has this experience shown me that i am capable ofexcelling in conducting research, but it has also allowed me to develop a lovefor the hands on learning that is so crucial to successful research. in my finalsemester at uri, i will be participating in an ongoing research projectconcerning brain function and attention span under the direction of dr. dominicvalentino, a professor in the psychology department at uri. this project willundoubtedly further advance my academic skills and reinforce my passion forresearch.
physical anthropology is more than just my primary area of education; ithas also become my hobby and lifestyle. the questions posed and answered via thestudy of physical anthropology have fascinated me for a very long time and havestimulated me to ask and seek to answer further questions. with my mind set onthe very specific goal of preparing myself as excellently as possible for afuture in the field of forensic anthropology, i am fully confident that, withthe ability to pursue my education at the university of massachusetts amherst, iwill not only be able to fulfill my dream, but to contribute substantially tothe university as well.
